Abstract

Drug addiction is a chronically relapsing mental illness involving severe motivational disturbances and loss of behavioral control leading to personal dev- tation. The disorder af?icts millions of people, often co-occurring with other mental illnesses with enormous social and economic costs to society. Several decades of research have established that drugs of abuse hijack the brain’s natural reward substrates, and that chronic drug use causes aberrant alterations in these rewa- processing systems. Such aberrations may be demonstrated at the cellular, neu- transmitter, and regional levels of information processing using either animal models or neuroimaging in humans following chronic drug exposure. Behaviorally, these neural aberrations manifest as exaggerated, altered or dysfunctional expr- sion of learned behavioral responses related to the pursuit of drug rewards, or to environmental factors that precipitate craving and relapse during periods of drug withdrawal. Current research efforts are aimed at understanding the associative and causal relationships between these neurobiological and behavioral events, such that treatment options will ultimately employ therapeutic amelioration of neural de?cits and restoration of normal brain processing to promote efforts to abstain from further drug use. The Behavioral Neuroscience of Drug Addiction, part of the Springer series on Current Topics in Behavioral Neurosciences, contains scholarly reviews by noted experts on multiple topics from both basic and clinical neuroscience ?elds.

Abstract

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF or GCSF) is a secreted glycoprotein that stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of granulocyte precursor cells, and induces mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells from the bone marrow. Development of recombinant human G-CSF has had a profound impact on the treatment of many diseases, including severe chronic neutropenia and cancer, and has enabled peripheral stem cell transplantation to supplant bone marrow transplantation in the autologous setting. This Milestones in Drug Therapy volume describes the experience of the last 20 years of treatment with recombinant human G-CSF, including the basic science, the use of recombinant human G-CSF in both the oncology and nononcology settings, and the safety and economics of its use. Many of the authors were the original investigators of recombinant human G-CSF and other authors are key researchers who provide their outlook for the next 20 years for use of and research with recombinant human G-CSF.

Abstract

Visual search is one of our most ubiquitous activities, as anyone who has had a "Where's my car?" moment can attest. Attending to relevant stimuli while screening out distractions requires a complex set of interactions between visual, neurological, and behavioral processes. While recent years have seen digital technologies both enhance our visual search experiences and present more intricate visual challenges in our everyday lives, advances in research are quickly catching up with the real world. The Influence of Attention, Learning, and Motivation on Visual Search brings together a number of exciting lines of inquiry into this topic. In keeping with the near-limitless set of variables that influence search, contributors represent scholarship in laboratory and applied settings, cognitive processes intimately involved in search, and related concepts from a variety of disciplines. Chapters delve into current studies on a wide range of component factors relating to search, including: - Searching in space and time. - Automatic control of visual selection. - Guidance of visual search by memory and knowledge. - Reward and attentional control in visual search. - Statistical learning and its consequences. - Overcoming hurdles in translating visual data between the lab and the field. - The search termination problem in visual search. For cognitive and social psychologists, The Influence of Attention, Learning, and Motivation on Visual Search is a stimulating volume that holds multiple possibilities for future developments across a number of behavioral and cognitive domains, from decision-making to problem-solving, from autism and other cognitive deficits to the effects of aging.
